About

CWLA2 estimates the CEFR-J level of English learners' writing (preA1, A1.1, A1.2, A1.3, A2.1, A2.2, B1.1, B1.2, B2.1, B2.2, C1, C2). Please input text between 10 and 800 words. The tool is primarily designed for high school-level compositions. For estimating the level of a reading text, please use CVLA.

  • The tool relies on external APIs (do not submit confidential data). Response times may vary depending on their availability, and errors may occur.
  • Due to API limitations, the daily input limit is approximately 50,000 words.

  • December 9, 2025: Updated to version 2.2. In CWLA 2.2, the ChatGPT-4o model will become obsolete, so the latest ChatGPT-5.1 is used as the evaluation engine. Its correlation with ICNALE GRA is 0.87, and its correlation with CWLA 2.1 is 0.93. Please note, however, that the assessment results may differ slightly from previous versions.
  • May 31, 2025: Feedback comments on each sentence were added.
  • March 29, 2025: Updated to version 2.1 with improved conversion to higher-level CEFR-J scales based on users' feedback and experiments. Japanese is now available as a feedback language.
  • December 8, 2024: Some bugs were fixed.
  • October 22, 2024: Version 2 Beta released.
